APD: Man arrested following hourslong SWAT standoff in East Austin

Police said the man faces at least two charges with others possibly pending.

AUSTIN, Texas — A man was arrested following an hourslong SWAT standoff in East Austin on Thursday.

Austin police received a call just before 6 a.m. Thursday about a physical disturbance between a man and woman at a home on Santa Rita Street, which is near Santa Rosa and Fourth streets.

APD officers made contact with the couple but determined there was no threat to the community, so they stayed to monitor the situation. Later, officers said the man barricaded himself inside the home.

SWAT and hostage negotiators were called out to the area around 12 p.m. when police say shots were fired from inside the home towards an area where a SWAT vehicle was parked. The man later exited the house without incident and was taken into custody.

Police say the man is charged with felon in possession of a firearm and family violence, with more charges possibly pending. APD said, thankfully, no officers or civilians were hurt during the standoff and nearby houses were evacuated as a precaution.

An investigation into the initial physical disturbance is ongoing. APD said anyone with information on the incident should contact police.
