Austin police to issue fewer arrests and more citations with updated policy

The policy seeks to keep more Austin officers on the streets and less citizens out of jail for non-violent offenses.

Austin — The Austin Police Department will have more leeway on deciding whether to arrest certain people starting Thursday.

The department leaders updated the policy called "cite and release," which gives officers the capacity to write citations for some misdemeanor offenses instead of making arrests.

The misdemeanors include possession of marijuana or the synthetic drug known as K2.

The policy seeks to have more police officers on the streets and keep citizens out of jail for non-violent offenses.
