Suspect in custody after SWAT callout off Riverside Drive

Police said the incident began when patrol officers spotted an occupied stolen vehicle.

AUSTIN, Texas — A suspect is in custody after a SWAT callout off of Riverside Drive on Tuesday afternoon.

The Austin Police Department said the incident began around 1:40 p.m. when patrol officers spotted an occupied stolen vehicle near Elmont Drive and Town Lake Circle.

Attempts were made to get the man to exit the white pickup, but he refused, according to police. He was reportedly intoxicated on an unknown substance.

The SWAT team was called in and breached the window of the pickup, at which time the suspect exited.

Police said once outside the vehicle, the suspect, a white man around 30 years old, failed to comply and was hit by less lethal rounds.

He was taken by Austin-Travis County EMS to a local hospital for evaluation.

APD expects charges to be filed for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, a state jail felony, as well as possible additional charges.
