Man killed by APD at northeast Austin apartment complex was holding BB gun, police confirm

Police said the man was firing a BB gun in the parking lot of the complex before pointing it at officers.

AUSTIN, Texas — Editor's note: A previous version of this story said ATCEMS arrived on the scene 20 minutes after shots were fired. It has been corrected to show medics arrived five minutes after shots were fired.

A man who was holding a BB gun was shot and killed by Austin police at an apartment complex on Tuesday afternoon.

According to APD Interim Chief of Police Robin Henderson, officers were called out to the complex along East Howard Lane near Dessau Road just after 1 p.m.

Henderson initially said the man was firing a rifle in the parking lot before pointing it at officers as they drove through the parking lot. In an update on Wednesday, APD confirmed to KVUE that the man was actually holding a BB gun.

Both officers exited the vehicle and immediately took cover, demanding that the man drop his weapon, according to police. That's when police say the man yelled that he wanted officers to shoot him.

After officers gave more verbal commands, shots were fired by police around 1:30 p.m. According to APD, EMS arrived about five minutes after the man was shot, but he was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:48 p.m.

The shooting is still being investigated. The APD officer who fired his gun will be placed on administrative duty pending the results of the investigation and bodycam footage of the shooting will also be released within 10 business days, according to police protocol.
