AUSTIN, Texas — Reginald Voglezon still remembers moving to Bernoulli Drive in 2004 and remembers the Nassar family moving in a couple of years later.
Voglezon quickly formed a friendship with the patriarch, Mohamed Nassar, who was not home when the shooting happened.
"We were on the homeowners association together," Voglezon said. "We used to go and check the properties, make sure everybody is in you know ... I remember one time I had to go to the doctor, and he took me and bring me back home. He waited for me ... That's how close we were."
What happened over the weekend shocked Voglezon.
Voglezon said his friend, Mohamed Nassar, was traveling when the shooting happened Saturday morning that left four people dead, including Senior Officer Jorge Pastore with the Austin Police Department. Police said 35-year-old Ahmed Nassar shot at officers as they responded to a stabbing call.
Austin police then called in help from a SWAT team when Ahmed Nassar opened fire again. The shooting left Pastore dead and one of his fellow officers injured. Two of Ahmed Nassar's apparent victims were 63-year-old Eyman Elnemrnassar and 32-year-old Riad Nassar. Ahmed Nassar also died.
"My wife couldn't take it, you know, she was so devastated by it," Voglezon said.
As the city prepares for Pastore's funeral, Voglezon is asking Austinites to keep their hearts open for the other victims.
"You don't judge people without even knowing them," Voglezon said.
KVUE reached out to other family members but did not hear back. KVUE also spoke with the imam who buried the family who said he "prays that the families find strength in this challenging time."
