AUSTIN, Texas — Austin police are investigating a deadly shooting that they say may have stemmed from a home invasion.
The shooting happened at a home on Foundation Road, which is in far northwest Austin near the Estates of Brentwood neighborhood.
A caller told police he shot a man who broke into his home on Sunday, Oct. 21. When APD arrived, they found Ricardo Cortez with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead a short time later.
A preliminary investigation revealed that Cortez broke into the home, then made his way into the bedroom where he was shot and killed by a man in the room. The man told police he shot Cortez in self-defense and immediately called 911. While the shooting happened in October, APD did not release any information on the shooting until exactly one month later.
There is no evidence that the resident and Cortez knew each other, police said.
APD said the resident fully cooperated with the investigation and the department will not be filing charges in the case. According to police, Cortez was not armed with a weapon at the time of the break-in.
If you have information on the deadly shooting, you're asked to contact APD's Homicide unit at 512-974-TIPS. You can also submit tips through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program.
APD says this is Austin's 56th homicide of 2023.
