Victim in deadly North Austin shooting identified as surveillance footage of suspect released

Callers also told police that the suspect was moving through backyards while trying to leave the scene.

AUSTIN, Texas — A possible suspect has been identified in a deadly shooting in North Austin.

Surveillance footage released by Austin police shows the suspect they believe may have killed a man Wednesday afternoon on Dryfield Drive. Police initially reported the shooting happened near Clearfield Drive and Beech Drive.

When police arrived, they located a man, later identified as 34-year-old Joshua Kozak, suffering from gunshot wounds. Police tried saving Kozak's life, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses told police that the suspect shot Kozak, then left the scene. Callers also told police that the suspect was moving through backyards while trying to leave the scene.

Police described the suspect as "armed and dangerous" after he was spotted near Larkspur Road.

Kozak's death is being investigated as Austin's 32nd homicide of 2024.
