AUSTIN, Texas — A man shot and killed by Austin Police Department (APD) officers on April 27 has been identified.
APD said officers killed 44-year-old Thomas Dray Price after he reportedly held multiple people at gunpoint.
The incident started when police were called to the Summer Grove apartment complex in northwest Austin just before 12:30 a.m. Callers told police they saw a man walking around the complex with a rifle. Moments later, callers told APD they heard multiple gunshots and were told four to five men were being held at gunpoint.
As officers made contact with a group of people in front of an apartment building, police said Price appeared in the breezeway holding a gun. Officers commanded Price to raise his hands and drop his gun, but he reportedly did not comply and instead raised his gun toward the officers.
Two officers then shot Price before putting him in handcuffs and attempting life-saving measures. Price was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
No one else was injured during this incident, and APD Interim Chief Robin Henderson said there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Henderson said this incident was captured on officers' body-worn cameras and, per APD policy, that video will be released within 10 business days. Also per APD protocol, the two officers who fired their weapons have been placed on administrative leave.
APD will conduct two concurrent investigations into this incident: a criminal investigation by the Special Investigations Unit in conjunction with the Travis County District Attorney's Office, and an administrative investigation conducted by the Internal Affairs Unit with oversight from the city of Austin's Office of Police Oversight.
Anyone with any information about this incident is encouraged to call the Special Investigations Unit at 512-974-6840. Tips may also be submitted anonymously to the Capital Area Crime Stoppers online or by calling 512-472-8477.
