Police identify victim in East Austin shooting

Police say Matthew Escalante was killed when he arrived to meet someone on Rosewood Avenue and was shot by a suspect who fled the scene.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin Police Department (APD) has identified a man killed last week in East Austin. 

APD said at approximately 4:34 p.m. on Nov. 7, officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 2600 block of Rosewood Ave.,, not far from Oak Springs Elementary School. When officers arrived, they found a man – later identified as 20-year-old Matthew Escalante – with a gunshot wound.

Escalante was taken to a hospital, where he died the following day around 3:20 p.m.

According to APD, it appears Escalante had arrived to meet someone and was shot and killed by a suspect who then fled the area with other suspects.

Anyone with any information about these suspects or this incident is asked to call APD at 512-974-TIPS, or leave an anonymous tip through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program online or by calling 512-472-8477. 

A reward of up to $1,000 may be available for information that leads to an arrest.

Escalante's death is being investigated as the city's 58th homicide of the year.
