Bastrop County man hit by celebratory gunfire on New Year's Day

According to the Bastrop County Sheriff's Office, nearly 50 calls were made concerning celebratory gunfire.

BASTROP COUNTY, Texas — A man is recovering after he was shot on New Year's Day in Cedar Creek.

According to the Bastrop County Sheriff's Office, nearly 50 calls were made concerning celebratory gunfire. Officials say the number of calls wasn't unusual, except one call ended with a different outcome.

Operators received a call just after midnight on New Year's Day reporting that a man had been shot. When deputies arrived, they found a man with a gunshot to the upper part of his back, near the neck area.

Investigators determined the bullet dropped out of the sky and was clearly from celebratory gunfire, but officials said they're unsure where the bullet came from because there was no shooting in the immediate area. The man was taken to a hospital for treatment before being released.

The sheriff's office said the shooter is subject to criminal prosecution, but it's unclear at this time if they're looking for a suspect.
