It's just the latest in a string of scams across Central Texas where officials are being impersonated.

BURNET COUNTY, Texas — Residents in Burnet County should think twice before answering their next phone call.

According to the Burnet County Sheriff's Office (BCSO), callers are targeting residents with a jury duty scam by using "some very convincing tactics."

Scammers are identifying themselves as BCSO deputies, which isn't something new in Central Texas. But the sheriff's office said the scammers have now managed to spoof their phone number, in addition to using the names of current deputies.

The sheriff's office said scammers will call a person to tell them they have pending misdemeanor charges for missing jury duty and that they need to report to the BCSO to settle the charges or pay by card.

Earlier this month, scammers were targeting those who lived in the Lakeway area and in Gillespie County by pretending to be police officers. Some phone calls were even traced to South Texas.

Authorities want to remind Burnet County residents that they can call the non-emergency office number at 512-756-8080 if they have any questions about a phone call they received.
