New Mexico woman arrested in Fayette County after police chase

Clorisa Franklin's three children were in the car during the chase.

ELLINGER, Texas — A Fayette County welfare check led to a police chase, then an arrest on Tuesday.

The Fayette County Sheriff's Office said a deputy conducted a welfare check after seeing a vehicle parked at a convenience store on State Highway 71 in Ellinger just after 1 a.m. Tuesday. The deputy made contact with the woman inside the vehicle, who was identified as Clorisa Franklin of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Franklin's three children, all under the age of 10, were in the vehicle's backseat.

After getting her information, the deputy learned that Franklin had multiple warrants out for her arrest in different states. The sheriff's office said while the deputy was speaking with Franklin, she took off out of the parking lot and onto SH 71 with no lights on. The deputy got in his car and chased after her.

The sheriff's office said Franklin drove faster than 100 miles per hour and turned around several times during the chase. After the deputy used a tire deflation device, Franklin pulled into a car dealership off the highway, where she was taken into custody.

Franklin was arrested for custodial interference in New Mexico and assault causing bodily injury - family violence in Brazoria County, Texas. She has also been charged with evading arrest or detention with a vehicle and endangering a child.

Her three children have been released to Child Protective Services.

No additional information is available at this time.
