SAN MARCOS, Texas -- The San Marcos Police Department said five men have been arrested in connection to the robbery of a pizza delivery driver on April 7.

According to police, the driver was sent to the Aqua 16 apartments just before 5 p.m. to fulfill a delivery order. When he arrived to the apartment, the residents told him they did not order pizza. Then, the driver called the phone number listed on the order, and the person who answered told him to go to another apartment for the delivery.

When he did so, police said the victim was approached by two men, one of whom acted as if he were going to pay for the pizzas. When the driver began to unload the pizzas from his carrier, police said one of the men struck him in the back of the head with a large metal water bottle and both ran off with the pizzas and his money bag.

Police reported that the victim suffered minor injuries and refused EMS transport.

On April 11, the SMPD said detectives reviewed surveillance video from a nearby business and saw that three other people were acting as lookouts for the two offenders. Investigators said they learned that several Gary Job Corps students had been staying at a nearby Motel 6. While reviewing video, it appeared the offenders fled to that hotel.

According to its website, Gary Job Corps is a "no-cost education and career technical training program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor that helps young people ages 16 to 24 improve the quality of their lives through career technical and academic training."

Police said they met with Gary Job Corps staff two days later to search through student photos. At this point, police positively identified Da Lavon Lamar Scruggs, 21, as a suspect. Police said he admitted to the robbery on April 13 and also implicated the other four men involved.

Police said Andrew Douglas Jones Jr., 21, Deshaun Adriel Moorer, 20, Daniel Cornelius Hagans, 21, and Sean Austin Garrett, 18, were arrested on April 17.

All five were identified as current Gary Job Corp students and charged with aggravated robbery, according to the SMPD.
