LEANDER, Texas -- Kathy Loraine Legrand, a former bus driver with the Leander Independent School District, has been indicted for driving while intoxicated with a school bus of between 22 and 30 children in October of last year, according to the Travis County's assistant district attorney.

Legrand, 61, was driving a school bus from River Ridge Elementary School when she started driving into mailboxes and trees along Quinlan Park Road, prompting a witness to call 911.

"The worst part about it was there were kids that were, they were calling their parents from the bus, because she was driving erratically all over the place, and they were basically panicking," said neighbor Alan Brown.

Deputies said Legrand was present when the children on the bus were transferred to a different bus by a school representative, but later, when asked where the children went, she told deputies she dropped them all off. She told them the damages on the bus, including a hanging rear view mirror, large white marks across the bumper and scratches consistent with tree branches, were from an incident two days prior.

Later, according to an arrest affidavit, Legrand told deputies she took a Xanax and a hydrocodone and ate a cinnamon bun on top of her usual medications.
