GEORGETOWN, Texas -- A Georgetown woman faces a cruelty to animal charge after she ran one of her dogs to death and nearly killed another, according to Williamson County court documents.
Esmeralda Escobar, 51, allegedly took her 10-year-old Border Collie for a run in the middle of the day without appropriate water or shade. When an officer went to check on the dog, he was whimpering and unable to move, appearing to be in pain. Escobar told police that she did not intend on getting the dog treatment.
Just three weeks ago, police were informed that Escobar killed her 3-year-old Australian Shepherd by running with her in the heat of the day. When police questioned why Escobar would take her older dog for a run when it recently killed her other dog, she said she did not want to leave the dog at home.
Police took the dog to an emergency care center, and the doctor said he would not survive without treatment for heat exposure. At first, Escobar allegedly asked to euthanize the dog since she could not afford treatment. According to the court document, the officer told the doctor that he would take the dog, and it was then that Escobar decided to treat him.
According to the Williamson County Sheriff's Office, Escobar is in custody with bond set at $7,500.
