'A party that got out of hand' | 20-year-old killed during fight at lake house party

According to Llano County Sheriff Bill Blackburn, the incident happened on July 14, at a home on Mesquite Drive.

LLANO COUNTY, Texas — The Llano County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of 20-year-old David Justus, who died in a hospital on July 23 after a fight at a house party in Kingsland more than a week prior.

According to Llano County Sheriff Bill Blackburn, the incident happened on July 14. He said, “It was a party that got out of hand.”

Blackburn said three people face manslaughter charges – two 19-year-olds, identified as Francisco Reyes and Ryan Moore, and a third man Blackburn did not identify, who has not been arrested.

“What we are developing is that it seems like one group started throwing beer cans at another, one got hit with a beer can and this guy went over to [Justus] and a big fight broke out,” the sheriff said. “It looks like [Justus] got hit and knocked down and hit his head on a piece of concrete."

Justus died on July 23, according to his online obituary.

Blackburn said about 30 teens and young adults gathered at a lake house on Mesquite Drive, which is owned by a person from Austin who he did not identify. He said the homeowner believed his son was hosting about five friends that weekend.

Blackburn said teens and young adults from several Central Texas towns were at the party, including some from Austin.

“Everybody's young, they party and everything. But, you know, sometimes it gets out of hand. And this is more of a retirement community," said Fred Cook, who has lived near Mesquite Road for eight years.  “It's getting a little bit too much at 1 a.m., 2 a.m., headlights in your windows. I'd seen the lights coming through – one top headed that way and another one over here. Then there was two. Then the ambulance came and all kinds of rigmarole, you know.”
