Woman sentenced to 18 years in prison for hitting off-duty Poteet police officer in 2022

Lindsay Smith was charged with intoxication manslaughter after hitting Officer Jeffrey Richardson near The Domain. Richardson later died from his injuries.

AUSTIN, Texas — A woman has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for hitting and killing an off-duty Poteet police officer near The Domain in 2022.

The Travis County Attorney's Office said late Thursday night that a jury sentenced Lindsay Smith to 18 years for the death of Officer Jeffrey Richardson.

Richardson was providing security in a construction zone on North MoPac when he was hit by Smith. The crash happened just after 2 a.m. in June 2022. Richardson later died from his injuries at a local hospital.

Investigators conducted a sobriety test on Smith and issued a warrant for her blood sample. She was charged with intoxication manslaughter.

"We are grateful for the jury’s thoughtful deliberation, and the family of Officer Richardson for placing their trust in our office," the county attorney's office said in a statement.
