Man accused of killing 16-year-old in East Austin arrested in Elgin

Records show Andrew Aviles is being held in the Travis County Jail without bond after allegedly killing a 16-year-old last year.

AUSTIN, Texas — A South Austin man accused of killing a 16-year-old last year is in custody, according to officials.

A U.S. Marshals-led task force said it arrested 18-year-old Andrew Aviles in connection to a deadly shooting on Sol Wilson Avenue in East Austin on Nov. 25.

Officials with the task force said Aviles was arrested in Elgin without incident after being surrounded by officers.

At the time, Austin police said 16-year-old Patrick Valdez died at the scene from a gunshot wound to the chest, while another person was taken to the hospital in the shooting.

APD's investigation into the shooting determined that a party was going on before Aviles arrived. When he was asked to leave, APD said a shooting followed in front of the house, leaving two people injured. Aviles allegedly took off in a vehicle immediately after he opened fire.

According to records, Aviles remains in Travis County Jail on a murder charge and is currently being held without bond.

Valdez's death was APD's 64th homicide investigation of 2023.
