AUSTIN, Texas — After 44 years, Austin police say they have found one of the people responsible for the murder of 25-year-old Susan Wolfe back in 1980.
Her brother, Charles Wolfe, said his sister loved helping people and was studying to be a nurse.
"I am looking at a person that cared about other people, that had so much promise. That was snuffed out in the prime of her life," Charles Wolfe said.
On Jan. 9, 1980, police said Susan Wolfe was kidnapped on Franklin Street while walking to a friend's house. A witness told police a car stopped, and the driver got out and grabbed her.
Susan Wolfe was found dead the next day. Police said she was sexually assaulted, strange and shot in the head.
"An open wound that festered in our family," Charles Wolfe said.
Now, four decades later, police say DNA linked Deck Brewer Jr. to the crime, leading a court to issue an arrest warrant for murder. However, Brewer is currently serving time in a Massachusetts prison for an unrelated crime.
"More than four decades of a cold case file," Charles Wolfe said. "It’s a path ... the first step to closure, but we are not going to rest until the people responsible for this heinous crime are brought to justice."
Charles Wolfe said he never gave up hope, and he wants to see Brewer extradited to Austin.
Police say they are still searching for a second person who they say was riding in the car with Brewer on the night of Susan Wolfe's murder.
Austin police say authorities in Massachusetts won't extradite Brewer until his current sentence is up on Wednesday, Aug. 28. After that, the Travis County Sheriff's Office will work out how to transport him to Texas.
