Man charged after being shot by homeowner during burglary in Taylor, police say

A large knife with a sheath that had "Hail Satan" inscribed on it was recovered by police after the shooting.

TAYLOR, Texas — A man is in custody after being shot during an alleged botched burglary in Taylor.

Police were called out to a home on Donna Drive late Monday night after a homeowner said someone with a knife was trying to break into his home.

The man eventually made his way into the home before being shot by the homeowner, according to police. Officers then found 23-year-old Austin Sumpter lying on the front porch with a single gunshot wound to his hip. He was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

During their investigation, police say they recovered a large knife with a sheath that had "Hail Satan" inscribed on it, which allegedly belonged to Sumpter.

After being released from the hospital, Sumpter was booked into Williamson County Jail and faces a felony burglary charge. He remains in jail on a $25,000 bond.

Meanwhile, the Taylor Police Department said it does not anticipate any charges will be filed against the homeowner. However, the department said when completed, the entire case will be submitted to the Williamson County District Attorney's Office for review.
