Back in January, the Manor Independent School District announced it had lost $2.3 million after falling prey to a "spear-phishing" scam. Now, the district said it anticipates it will be able to recover about a little over a third of that money.
Manor police said the scam started in the first part of November and continued through December before the district found out and reported it. They said the phishing email was sent to multiple people at the school district and it was a single person that responded.
On Monday, Manor ISD said that, through working with its bank and insurance provider, it anticipates to recover an initial amount of approximately $800,000. Additional funds may be recovered as law enforcement continues to investigate the incident.
The district also said it has developed additional internal security protocols with a variety of training and testing efforts designed to continually educate Manor ISD staff.
Manor PD is continuing to follow up on leads in this case. No other information is available at this time, as the investigation is ongoing.
