New details after Austin mom charged following investigation into infant daughter's death

The woman's 3-month-old daughter died days after reportedly falling off a bed at an Austin apartment complex.

AUSTIN, Texas — A mother remains in the Travis County Jail as court documents reveal new details about the death of her infant daughter.

Brittney Bailey was arrested and charged Wednesday with felony injury to a child after her 3-month-old daughter died earlier this month.

According to an affidavit obtained by KVUE, the Austin Police Department (APD) was called out to The Revl Apartments on March 10 following a report that a 3-month-old child was not breathing after falling off a bed.

When APD arrived, they discovered the infant's twin sister unresponsive on the kitchen floor. That infant was taken to a hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

On March 11, APD said officers conducted a welfare check on the infant who had reportedly fallen off the bed and found the 3-month-old with several injuries, including cuts and bruises to her face.

Bailey allegedly blamed the injuries on her 17-month-old daughter, saying she saw her older daughter playing rough with the infant and throwing a cellphone at her.

Police said the infant was then taken to the hospital where medical staff found injuries to her lips, cheeks and nostrils, along with bruises to her forehead and neck. Upon further examination, they also allegedly found numerous fractures to both legs and possible fractures to her ribs. The infant later died on March 15.

Medical staff stated that the injuries could not have been caused by the infant's 17-month-old sister and that they were "attributable to forces generated by someone with the strength and coordination of an adult," according to the affidavit. The father of the sisters also told police that he allegedly witnessed Bailey being rough with the infant on several occasions, but that she would assault him when he tried to intervene.

Police asked the father to use a doll to demonstrate Bailey's treatment of the infant, which included how Bailey hit the baby with enough force to hear a "thud" during burping, according to the affidavit.

During an interview with police on March 21, Bailey once again allegedly said her 17-month-old daughter was responsible for the injuries to her deceased infant. When confronted by police that her statement did not match the nature of the injuries, she nodded her head in agreement before requesting to use the restroom. Bailey then allegedly left the officers and did not finish the interview.

Bailey is being held in jail on a $40,000 bond. It remains unclear if she will face additional charges in the case.
