Man with dozens of drug-related offenses arrested for murder after man dies from fentanyl in Hutto

The man is currently serving a four-year sentence for possession of a controlled substance, according to the Williamson County Sheriff's Office.

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Texas — A man with more than 25 drug-related offenses has now been arrested for murder.

The Williamson County Sheriff's Office says 27-year-old Tyreik Gilbert was arrested following a year-long investigation into a death in Hutto.

According to the sheriff's office, Hutto police found 26-year-old Joseph Barrera dead in his bedroom at a home on Neuces River Trail. After learning Barrera died from fentanyl poisoning, investigators said they determined Gilbert sold Barrera the deadly dose.

Gilbert's arrest is the eighth related to a fentanyl-induced murder for the Organized Crime Unit of the sheriff's office. Four of those cases were taken to federal court with another four prosecuted at the state level.

The sheriff's office says Gilbert is currently serving four years in jail for possessing a controlled substance.
