Man shot, killed in North Austin shooting on June 18 identified

APD said the man was killed during an altercation between two groups at a Motel 6 in North Austin.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin Police Department (APD) has identified a man killed in a shooting over the weekend.

APD said Fermin Nunes Arrellano was killed when a disturbance broke out between two groups on June 18.

Officers responded to a call reporting a shooting in the 7100 block of North Interstate 35 around 4:55 p.m. That's around a Motel 6 and Denny's. Responding officers arrived on the scene and found two gunshot victims.

Life-saving measures were performed on both, but one of the shooting victims was pronounced dead at the scene. The other was taken to the hospital in serious condition. The victim was later identified as Nunes Arrellano.

While at the scene, officers learned that a suspect had fled in a vehicle. That person was later found near 45th Street and Airport Boulevard, Officer Michael Bullock said. That person had gunshot wounds as well and was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

A preliminary investigation by APD found that an altercation between two groups, including Nunes Arrellano, began at Motel 6. During the altercation, one of the men fired a handgun, hitting and killing Nunes Arrellano. After interviewing witnesses and reviewing video surveillance, Osiel Nunez-Lopez was taken to the Travis County Jail and charged with aggravated assault.

Bullock said the area where the shooting happened is a "hotspot" for gun-related calls.

"This area, in particular, is a hotspot for us and we deal with quite a bit of firearm-related calls for service as well as homicides and various other things," he said.

The case is being investigated as Austin's 32nd homicide of 2022, APD said.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact APD or Crime Stoppers.
