'I heard a boom and a yell' | Police investigating alleged hit-and-run of 14-year-old in East Austin

Police say the teen was reportedly struck near Webberville Road and Bedford Street.

AUSTIN — The Austin Police Department is investigating after a 14-year-old was reportedly hit by a car at the 3500 block of Webberville Road near the Bedford Street area Tuesday night.

Those who live on Webberville road said speedy drivers are far too common.

"Cars come through here so fast like in the morning and through the night,” said Heather Cavazos, who lives nearby.

The speeding drivers are a problem when there are lots of children looking to cross the street.

"At night tim, [children] come over here and buy some chips or food or anything they want to, but it's kind of scary, you know, people who drive like 40 and 50 miles an hour,” said Deepak James, a convenience store worker.

Tuesday night police said the driver of a white truck failed to stop and hit a child near the Webberville and Bedford intersection. Cavazos said she was at home at the time.

"I heard a boom and a yell, so I figured a gun shot,” said Cavazos. “I open the door and you can see a bunch of people out here -- the cops and paramedics and they're around a body."

The child is believed to be 14 years old and in serious condition. Sadly, this isn't the first time something like this has happened near that intersection.

“He was running across the street to the store on the way to school,” said Samisha Hutchison, mother of a hit-and-run victim.

In 2017, Hutchison said it was her 5-year-old son who was hit by a driver.

"It's hurtful,” said Hutchison. “It's like what kind of heart does this person have? How can you be so careless to not care that you just hit someone?"

Now, the community is just hoping for the best.

"I just hope he's okay and send prayers out to the family and I hope they find who did it,” said Cavazos.

Those who live nearby said they'd like to see stops signs and speed bumps in the area where the driver hit the child.

Police said the driver left the scene and described the vehicle as a 1990s two-door, single cab white Ford Ranger. Police said there was a large container or box in the truck bed as of Tuesday night.

Anyone with information about the suspect's vehicle is asked to call 512-974-8212.
