AUSTIN, Texas — A man now charged with first-degree murder in the death of his father had his parents take him to Academy Sports and Outdoors prior to the shooting to buy ammunition, according to an arrest affidavit.
Police said they received multiple calls on March 7 around 7:50 p.m. reporting there had been a shooting at the Towers of Town Lake Apartments near Downtown Austin. Upon arrival, a police officer noticed a rifle on the ground outside of the apartment unit in question. Once inside, police found the mother kneeling over a man who was identified as her husband, Nadir Abdeladim, attempting CPR.
The officer, who then took over CPR efforts, said the victim appeared to have multiple bullet wounds on his upper body and he was lying in a pool of blood. Nadir was later transported by EMS but was pronounced dead at 8:04 p.m.
The wife reported that her son, Hakim Abdeladim, 30, lives in Lago Vista and they try to visit him on the weekends. She said they have grown concerned over his recent displays of violence and that he suffers from mental issues.
Police said she reported that she and Nadir picked up their son earlier that day around 6 p.m. in Lago Vista and that he wanted them to stop at the Academy Sports and Outdoors at Oak Knoll. While they stayed in the car, police reported he purchased ammunition unbeknownst to his parents.
Later at home, she told police that she asked Hakim if he wanted to go out to dinner with them and he said no. While she was downstairs at the Towers, she reported that her son told her he was going to take the mail to their unit. Minutes later, she said the security guard ran up to her to report there was "something going on" in their apartment.
When she arrived upstairs, she said she saw a big, black gun on the floor that she had never seen before. When she found her husband on the ground, she said she began life-saving efforts and noticed it appeared his neck looked severely cut. She said she also found a knife near his body.
Police believe an AR-15 was used in the shooting. The mother reported Hakim may have snuck it inside by hiding it under a large brown coat. She also said there were no other people in their apartment beside Hakim and Nadir when she left to go downstairs.
A neighbor told police he heard four loud bangs and later saw a man seeming to match Hakim's description. After he asked him what was going on, he said the suspect looked back at him with "crazy eyes" and was breathing hard and sweating. The suspect then left the building.
After checking surveillance video from a nearby Chevron station, police saw Hakim walking south of the store. He was later spotted wearing the same clothing as seen in surveillance video from earlier and detained. Police then seized his shoes as evidence, which appeared to have blood on them.
Hakim was transported to the police center, where he spoke with a detective. Police said the suspect immediately said that he wanted a lawyer.
After searching their apartment, police said they found eight fired WIN .223 cases, one unfired round, a JAK-15 Army rifle, a silver folding knife and bullet fragments. They also seized a receipt from Academy, which showed the same ammunition was purchased there. The receipt also showed the purchase was made with a gift card, which matched one Hakim was found in possession of. Police reported the brown jacket used to conceal the weapon was found next to the rifle case in the bathroom.
The Travis County Medical Examiner ruled Nadir's cause of death as gunshot wounds and sharp force injury and manner as homicide.
