AUSTIN, Texas — A 17-year-old faces new charges after a recent shooting at a Pflugerville ISD high school parking lot.
Austin police said Vince Nguyen shot a man and ran him over with his car outside of Connally High School on Jan. 29.
New court documents obtained by KVUE show Nguyen now faces two more charges after police conducted a follow-up interview with the victim.
During the interview, the victim told police he noticed his truck door was opened and that someone had gone through his truck. After he walked up to Nguyen's car, he noticed cash on the passenger seat and was allegedly told by Nguyen that he wouldn't get it back.
The victim also noticed an AK-47 in Nguyen's lap before Nguyen allegedly shot the man and ran him over. Police said school surveillance video matches the victim's story.
Nguyen was initially charged with aggravated assault, theft of a firearm and unlawfully carrying a weapon. He's now also charged with aggravated robbery and exhibiting a firearm on a school campus.
Parents react to Connally High School shooting
School officials alerted parents about the Jan. 29 shooting in the evening saying, "It's believed to be an isolated incident, and neither other students nor staff were at risk during the incident."
Some parents told KVUE they appreciated the school's transparency, but others were shocked by the news.
"It's is kind of scary to think that that happened during school hours," Mendy Barnett said. "That my kiddo could have been involved in that."
Marlon Rivas said his nephew hasn't felt safe at the school for a while.
"It's a little bit sad for me because this used to be a real good school," Rivas said. "But not anymore."
The victim reportedly told police he knew Nguyen because he had dated Nguyen's girlfriend's best friend.
Cameras captured video of Nguyen's car leaving the high school at the time of the incident, which led police to Nguyen's home where he was arrested. The victim suffered a gunshot wound to his left shoulder along with several cuts on his body after allegedly being dragged by Nguyen's car.
"It's is kind of scary to think that that happened during school hours," Mendy Barnett said. "That my kiddo could have been involved in that ... I felt like they did a good job at least informing us."
