AUSTIN -- A man is charged with murder after he allegedly stabbed a man to death in Central East Austin Monday morning.
According to an arrest affidavit, police were called to the Austin Fleet Service Center on East Eighth Street around 3:45 a.m. A supervisor there told police that James Robert Miller, Jr., 65, walked into the building and asked to speak to a police officer. Miller told an officer, "I think I killed someone ... I stabbed him."
Miller said that he had met the victim, 32-year-old Daniel Spencer, once before and was invited to his residence Sunday night. In a recorded conversation with police, Miller said that they were both musicians, and that they were playing music. Miller said he told the man "Hey, I'm not gay ...We're musicians and all that kind of stuff but I'm not a gay guy." According to the affidavit, he continued, "Then it seemed like everything was alright and everything was fine. When I got ready to go -- it seemed like [stuff] just started happening."
Miller then led police to a residence in the 1100 block of Navasota Street. The officer could see an unresponsive man on the floor. The affidavit states that the officer entered through an unlocked door and found the man dead. Austin-Travis County EMS pronounced him dead at 4:38 a.m.
Miller told police he changed clothes before contacting them, so police searched his residence, where they found bloodstained clothing and a bloodstained folding knife.
Miller is charged with a murder, a first-degree felony. His bond is set at $250,000.
