'He's a kid' | New developments in case of 17-year-old charged in Round Rock mass shooting

Ricky Thompson III could face more charges as an investigation into the Juneteenth festival shooting continues.

ROUND ROCK, Texas —

The case for the first person charged in the Round Rock mass shooting has been reset.

Ricky Thompson III is one of three people arrested and charged in the Juneteenth shooting that left two women dead and 14 others hurt. He was expected to appear in court Tuesday, but Williamson County District Attorney Shawn Dick and Thompson's attorney Amber Vazquez met to figure out a plan moving forward.

Thompson, a 17-year-old Manor ISD student, has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He could face more charges pending further investigation.

"This act in and of itself is an act that we can't tolerate. Families deserve to go to a festival. They deserve to be able to enjoy an event in a park in Williamson County free from any fear of violence," Dick said. "So this case, obviously, has gotten my attention. This should not happen in Williamson County, and we're going to do everything we can to hold everyone responsible for this offense."

Court documents obtained by KVUE revealed the shooting on June 15 at Old Settlers Park started as an ongoing rap feud between two groups.

Vazquez called her client an "emerging young artist," who was getting traction with his music and not involved in a gang or any criminal organization.

"We are looking forward to a very diligent investigation to round up everyone that was involved. We feel confident that it will become clear what Ricky Thompson's role was and that he was not the killer," Vazquez said.

A witness stated Thompson and 18-year-old Keshawn Dixon "pulled out guns and started shooting" after confronting each other. Dixon allegedly used a gun with a machine gun conversion device and lost control of the weapon.

Police say the two women killed in the shooting, Ara Duke and Lyndsey Vicknair, were innocent bystanders. However, it remains unclear who shot them. The other injured victims' ages range from 10 to 62 years old.

Thompson, who allegedly admitted to firing three shots at another person during the event, was arrested on June 20 in Pflugerville. He's expected back in court on Sept. 11.
