Texas road rage shootings are highest in the nation, according to analysis

The state saw the most gunfire incidents on roadways during a 10-year period.

TEXAS, USA — Road rage shootings have become an increasing problem across the U.S., with some states reporting exceedingly high numbers in recent years. 

Texas had more road rage gun incidents than anywhere else in the country over a 10-year period, according to an analysis from nonprofit newsroom The Trace, using information from the Gun Violence Archive

The state saw 741 incidents and 530 total shootings spanning from 2014-2023, adding to the national rise of more than 400%. In total, 72% of Texas' incidents involved a person getting shot, and 146 victims were killed over the last decade. 

A Texas city also ranked highest in the nation for gunfire on the roadways. Houston was at the top with 215 incidents, 192 shootings and 207 individuals shot. 

San Antonio tied with Memphis at No. 2 with 107 incidents. That Texas city had 83 shootings and 94 people who were shot. 

In Austin, The Trace reported 39 total incidents, resulting in 20 shootings where 24 people were shot. 

Road rage shootings rise across the nation

On a national level, roadway shootings grew by 23% annually over the past 10 years. The country saw more than 3,000 people shot, with 777 deaths. 

Ten years ago, there were 83 total road rage shootings in the U.S., compared to 449 last year. According to the analysis, 2022 saw the most road rage shootings, with 502 in total. 

Nearly every state reported road rage shootings, with North Dakota and South Dakota as the only exceptions. 

Behind Texas for greatest number of road rage shootings were Florida and California. The states with the fewest incidents were Hawaii, Rhode Island, the Dakotas and Wyoming, with the least overall.
