AUSTIN, Texas — Editor's note: A previous version of this article said that the man escorted out of the party did not fire the shots. This article has been updated to reflect new information.
A private security officer remains in the hospital after he was shot outside of the Topgolf in Austin on Sunday.
According to Texas Public Safety and Investigations (TPSI), the private security company contracted by Topgolf was attending an event at the location in northeast Austin. Officers were told to deal with a man at the event in the driving range.
"I was told he was intoxicated and was told he was urinating in a stairwell," said Robert Dittman, the Internal Affairs division chief. "There was an individual requested by management to be removed by two of our officers, and the individual was escorted off the property by our officers."
Dittman said the man and a woman left Topgolf on foot just after 10 p.m. Saturday. The man then returned just after midnight in a pickup truck with two other people. That's when officials say two people got out of the truck and attacked a security guard on a golf cart.
"Began to punch and otherwise assault them," Dittman said. "One officer assisted his partner and was able to get the first individual off him. At some point during the struggle between the officers, a third individual produced a firearm and two shots rang out, one of them striking the officer in his right side."
Dittman said after the shots were fired the three people left the scene, and a security officer began aid on his partner.
"Using his beanie to stop the bleeding provided direct pressure on wound until APD arrived," Dittman said.
The security officer who was shot is still in the hospital in serious condition. Meanwhile, Austin police are still investigating the shooting. At this time, no arrests have been made.
Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to contact Austin police.
