AUSTIN, Texas — Northeast Austin’s John Reagan High School has voted to change its name to Northeast Early College High School.
The Austin ISD board settled on the name on Monday night after narrowing it down between two options. The other name, Barack H. Obama High, ultimately did not make the cut.
The new name will go into effect for the 2019-2020 school year.
Reagan is named after John H. Reagan, the Confederate Postmaster General.
The new name comes a year after trustees said they would rename five schools whose names have Confederate ties.
Trustee Rev. Dr. Jayme Mathias said the Reagan name did “not represent Austin values” and it was time to right the wrongs of the past.
