Four local school districts were recognized in this year's H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards.
Melinda Gaona Schermerhorn, fifth grade teacher at Elsa England Elementary School in Round Rock ISD, won the rising star award in the elementary category, recognizing teachers with less than 10 years of experience. Schermerhorn received a $5,000 check for herself and a $5,000 grant for the school.
In the leadership category, Erica Crowder, a Kindergarten teacher at Windermere Primary School in Pflugerville ISD, was honored for her 10 to 20 years in the classroom. She received a $10,000 check for herself and a $10,000 grant for her school.
"(The students) are just on fire to learn every single day," Crowder said. "It's just like they're waiting for you to open up their brains and pour in the knowledge."
Burnet CISD won in the small school district category, receiving a $50,000 cash prize.
