AUSTIN, Texas — Students have returned to class after the Austin Fire Department (AFD) confirmed crews responded to a gas leak on Tuesday morning at Akins High School.

AFD said it had crews on the scene just before 8 a.m. for an odor investigation. Two units responded and confirmed there was an active gas leak.

A tech from Texas Gas Service came out roughly 25 minutes later, and AFD confirmed it no longer had crews on the scene as of 12:30 p.m.

Austin ISD said the school was evacuated for approximately 45 minutes due to the gas leak. Fire department officials investigated the gas levels and determined the school was safe for reentry. The students were able to return to the building at 9:20 a.m.

Texas Gas Service will be doing additional checks during the rest of the day, Austin ISD said.
