Austin ISD breaks ground on modernized Sanchez Elementary School

Once completed in 2021, the campus will also house Metz Elementary students.

AUSTIN, Texas — Austin ISD broke ground Thursday celebrating the modernization of Sanchez Elementary School.

The new campus is expected to hold 580 students.

Sanchez Elementary students are currently sharing a campus with Metz Elementary. Once the campus re-opens, all students at Metz will go to the new school.

The new and improved school is set to open in August 2021.

A $25 million motion to modernize the school was approved in September 2018 by the AISD Board of Trustees. At the time, the meeting was met with protesters with the East Austin School Manifestos Coalition – a group of parents and community leaders who feared the project would result in the consolidation of Metz and Zavala Elementary.

In November 2019, AISD made its final vote to close four schools starting in the 2020-21 school year. Metz was among those.
