AUSTIN, Texas — Leaders with Austin ISD say the district is on track to cut the current budget deficit in half by June.
At a school board meeting Thursday night, AISD Superintendent Matias Segura confirmed that the district is on track for that goal.
In June 2023, leaders said the district was facing a $52 million budget shortfall. Since then, AISD has cut costs through a number of measures including job vacancies and by lowering overtime pay and contract expenses.
The state of Texas hasn't increased enrollment-based funding for public schools since 2019, which has prompted the district to set a goal of maintaining a $30 million deficit in future budgets. Any additional expenses, such as employee raises, would result in more cuts.
"When we think about those adds, we have to be very, very, very sure that those are the adds that we as a community, as an organization, this administration support," Segura said Thursday.
The district has indicated that it will look at potential investments and cuts in April, as it is slated to approve a budget in June.
