Del Valle ISD unveils district's new Early College High School

The school district also held its back-to-school bash on Saturday with free backpacks for students.

AUSTIN, Texas — Del Valle ISD unveiled the district’s new Early College High School on Saturday.

The new facility is for students seeking careers in manufacturing, engineering and computer science. Courses taught at the school will give students an opportunity to earn an associate degree while attending high school.

"This is a building which is a building of our future, and it prepares students for specific careers that are aligned with the needs of our community," Del Valle ISD Acting Superintendent Jonathan Harris said. "It is designed to be a flexible space which is also future-ready, allowing learning for future career paths that we may not even know about yet."

Also on Saturday, the school district held its annual back-to-school bash, where over 2,000 students got free backpacks.

It was also an opportunity for students to have some fun ahead of the school year. There were bounce houses, food trucks and even a petting zoo.

The back-to-school bash also offered the community a number of additional resources.

"It's a combination of a resource fair with both internal as well as outside entities to share with our families and our community to share the type of resources that we have within Del Valle ISD to help provide those wraparound services for our families as well," Harris said.

Del Valle ISD kicks off the school year on Wednesday, Aug. 7.
