Georgetown ISD banning TikTok from district devices

The district's board of trustees voted Monday to ban all apps owned by Chinese company Bytedance, which includes TikTok.

AUSTIN, Texas — School-issued devices in Georgetown ISD will no longer be allowed to access TikTok.

The move comes after the district's board of trustees approved a new policy on Monday night that mandates the removal of all apps owned by Bytedance, the Chinese tech company that owns TikTok.

The move follows an order issued by Gov. Greg Abbott in December 2022 that banned TikTok from state-issued devices, citing privacy concerns.

Under the new policy, the district can block access to app stores, remove unauthorized apps remotely and maintain the ability to remotely wipe devices.

The board is also considering a move that would extend the ban to personal devices used for school business, under the "Bring Your Own Device" program.
