MANOR, Texas — May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to highlight resources and provide support for those who might be suffering from various mental disorders.
In an effort to increase overall wellness, one Central Texas school district is becoming the first in the area to offer mental health days for its staff.
Manor Independent School District made the official announcement Monday, stating it will allow for two added days off starting this fall.
"We understand that the well-being of our staff directly influences the success of our students," Superintendent Dr. Robert Sormani said.
He believes this decision will support employees so that "they can perform at their best both in the classroom and beyond."
Full-time staff members will receive one day in fall 2024 and another in spring 2025 in addition to their regular time-off.
Meanwhile, part-time employees will be able to take off in accordance with the number of hours they work. These days do not roll over from one semester to the next.
Other potential changes to Manor ISD
Looking forward, Sormani hopes to make additional changes to the school district by potentially increasing current staff salaries.
On Monday, he met with the Board of Trustees to discuss the possibility of a 1% raise, which could be lifted even higher depending on a vote in the upcoming fall election.
The Voter Approved Tax Rate Election (VATRE) would not only allow for a 3% raise, it would also provide funding for more campus police officers, social workers and student mental health programs.
Further discussion on VATRE will be held May 20 during an upcoming Board of Trustees meeting.
