AUSTIN, Texas — On Wednesday afternoon, Austin ISD broke ground on a complete renovation of Pecan Springs Elementary in East Austin.
The campus is getting a full makeover as part of the district's 2022 bond program. It's the 12th major project to get started since voters approved the funding.
The modernized campus will have flexible learning spaces, outdoor classrooms and upgraded security measures throughout the building.
District leaders, including Superintendent Matias Segura, took part in Wednesday's ceremony, which included performances by Pecan Springs students.
"This modernization is about creating new spaces that reflect our diverse student body and help each and every one of our students succeed, grow and connect," Segura said. "We know that students, teachers and families thrive when we invest in schools that are custom-built."
Construction is expected to take about two years, with students and staff moving into their new building in fall 2026.
