Round Rock ISD police chief no longer with district following investigations

District administrators described Dennis Weiner's departure as a "personnel change" that went to into effect May 14.

AUSTIN, Texas — Dennis Weiner is no longer serving as the police chief for the Round Rock Independent School District (RRISD) after a report released this week on social media that said that district employees described the culture of the RRISD Police Department as "toxic" and "chaotic."

The report was initiated by a complaint filed against Weiner and was the result of two investigations conducted by a third-party private investigator in September and October of 2023. Investigators interviewed employees and officers working with RRISD and reviewed school district documents to reach the conclusions in the report.

The report outlines a litany of alleged issues within the department, including favoritism, retaliation and poor communication. Some employees were given stipends for working extra hours while some were not, according to the report.

RRISD confirmed on Friday afternoon that Weiner is no longer employed by the district but did not clarify whether he was fired or if he resigned, only stating that the district's police department is now under the leadership of Interim Chief Lauren Griffith.

Griffith served in the same role two years ago and has been employed with the district since 2020, becoming a sergeant in 2021.

The district did confirm that an "inaccurate letter" sent to the district's Board of Trustees was "prepared by Mr. Weiner" and shared the following statement:

"Our commitment to the safety and well being of our students has never wavered. The content of Mr. Weiner’s letter inaccurately represents personnel matters and an incident involving minors. All incidents involving students have been addressed in accordance with applicable law and district policy."
