Texas high school students did about the same on this year's STAAR test compared to last year's

Texas Education Agency Commissioner Mike Morath said the results highlight Texas students' progress and show the challenges that remain to help students improve.

AUSTIN, Texas — Texas students performed about the same on the STAAR test this year as they did last year, except in English II, where they did better, and U.S. History, where they did worse.

On Friday, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) released the 2024 State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) End-of-Course (EOC) assessment results. The results include scores in Algebra I, English I, English II, Biology and U.S. History.

The TEA said this year's STAAR test results show that performance has remained largely consistent. The percentage of students meeting grade level held steady in Algebra I, Biology and English I. Meanwhile, in English II, there was a 4% increase in the percentage of students meeting grade level, reaching 60%.

On the other hand, in U.S. History, there was a 2% decrease, from 71% to 69%.

"The 2024 STAAR End-of-Course results highlight both the progress Texas students and educators have made and the challenges that remain to help students improve outcomes, which can only come from a robust assessment and accountability system," Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath said. "While we celebrate the gains in English II, we must also acknowledge the areas where student performance has not recovered to pre-pandemic levels."

The TEA also noted that this year's STAAR test results show an increase in the percentage of Emergent Bilingual (EB) students who met grade level across all of the assessments. An EB student is defined as a student in the process of learning English who has another language as their primary language.

EB students saw an increase in both English I and II, rising four percentage points, according to the results. The TEA said this improvement is especially significant because it represents a lot of students, with 24% of the state's 5.5 million public school students classified as EB.

For parents and guardians, the TEA encourages them to log into their school district's family portal or TexasAssessment.gov to view their child's individual STAAR test results. The STAAR report card includes each STAAR question and answer, along with their child's answers.

STAAR results for third through eighth grade will be made publicly available on June 14. That day, parents and guardians will be able to view their child's individual results using a unique access code provided by their child's school or by logging into their school district's family portal.
