AUSTIN, Texas — On Saturday, the University of Texas at Austin celebrated "Girl Day," an afternoon of hands-on science, technology, engineering and math activities for young girls and their parents.
UT said that over 8,000 elementary and middle school students were expected to participate in its 19th annual Girl Day, with over 1,500 volunteers from over 160 student organizations, research groups, companies and community organizations.
UT's Cockrell School of Engineering took part in celebrating girl engineers with "Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day," an international event celebrated annually during Engineers Week.

The overall goal of the day was to hopefully inspire girls to pursue any career they want.
"It helps to bring acceptance that girls can be engineers too and scientists," said Martin Warnasch, who attended the event with his daughter, Sarah Grace. "The world has changed a lot in the last 30 years. It's great that girls have those opportunities."
And Sarah Grace Warnasch has her sights set on a big goal.
"I want to be the first president of the United States that is a girl," she told KVUE.
