UT Austin ranked one of the worst universities for public speech

The university received a "poor" rating after a survey conducted among 58,000 students.

AUSTIN, Texas — The University of Texas at Austin has been ranked one of the worst colleges in the U.S. for free speech.

The school was ranked as the eighth-worst for free speech out of 250 universities throughout the country for 2025, according to a report from College Pulse.

The university was given a grade of 23.39 out of a possible 100, with nearly half of all UT students saying that they censor themselves once or more every month. UT was also the lowest-ranked public university listed on the survey.

The "poor" rating was determined after a survey was answered by roughly 58,000 students during a five-month period, from January 2023 to June 2023.

Students were asked 25 questions relating to censorship, listening to speakers with opposing political viewpoints, perception of a school's willingness to discuss various topics and more.

The ranking comes nearly five months after protests erupted on college campuses throughout the country, including at UT, where hundreds of students gathered to push the university to divest funding from Israel.

The top-ranked school for free speech in the nation was the University of Virginia, which received a grade of 73.41. Harvard University was the lowest-ranked school, receiving a 0.0 grade.
