Float Fest forced to find new location after judge denies permit appeal

The annual music and float festival in Guadalupe County has faced several legal battles over concerns about safety and crowds.

GUADALUPE COUNTY, Texas — Float Fest is an annual event near San Marcos that brings tens of thousands of people to Guadalupe County for a floating and music festival. But this year, the organizers will be forced to look elsewhere for a place to hold the event.

Thursday night, a Guadalupe District Judge denied the Float Fest organizer's appeal for a permit, after the Guadalupe County Commissioners Court voted against the permit in January.

Float Fest, which began in 2014 with around 5,000 people at Cool River Ranch, has grown to 20,000 people in 2018. This year, organizers were trying to get a permit for 25,000 people to attend the event – but they were denied.

Thomas Watkins – the lawyer for the event's promoter, Current Events, LLC – said the main concern officials had was safety. The road outside Cool River Ranch is a small, two-lane county road.

Citing egress and ingress concerns, the district judge denied the appeal.

Now, Watkins said his clients will look for a different venue with better egress and ingress access.

Watkins said it's likely the event will take place in a different county, but they still expect Float Fest to happen this July.
