Mountain City mayor, longtime law enforcement official dies in car crash

The Hays Consolidated Independent School District is mourning the unexpected loss of Phillip Taylor. He died in a car accident March 28.

AUSTIN, Texas — Officials in Hays County are mourning after a staff member with the school district there died in a car accident on March 28.

Phillip Taylor, who previously worked for the Hays County Sheriff's Office, was killed in the crash which happened on FM 2770, south of Buda, officials said.

According to the Department of Public Safety, Taylor was traveling south on FM 2770 when he drifted off the west side of a roadway, entered a skid and struck a culvert. Taylor was ejected from his vehicle after his Jeep rolled over multiple times, DPS said. He reportedly died at the scene.

According to the press release, Taylor was previously a sergeant with the Hays County Sheriff's Office, a detective and a deputy sheriff. He first started his career with the sheriff's office in January 2000.

Most recently, Taylor was director of safety and security for Hays Consolidated Independent School District. He was also the mayor of Mountain City and a volunteer emergency management specialist with the Hays County Office of Emergency Management at the time of his death. 

Hays CISD, Hays County, and law enforcement and emergency responders are mourning this unexpected loss.

“We are extremely saddened by Phillip’s death – both personally and professionally,” said Superintendent Dr. Eric Wright in a statement. “We couldn’t have asked for a more competent, highly skilled, and dedicated person to serve as our safety and security director. We also couldn’t have asked for a more friendly, fun, and compassionate colleague. Phillip was not just a coworker, he was a member of our school district and community family who will be profoundly missed.”

“It wasn’t just Phillip’s experience and talent that made him uniquely perfect to be our first safety and security director. It was also his deep ties to our school district and community that attracted us to him,” said Dr. Wright. “On behalf of our entire school district, I want to extend our thoughts and prayers to Phillip’s parents, Lee and Glennis, and his son Aiden, and thank them for sharing such an amazing person with us.”
