AUSTIN, Texas — Austin ISD leaders are taking precautions when it comes to the deadly coronavirus.
There have not been any confirmed cases in Texas, but district officials are still working diligently to ensure students' safety. Starting on Jan. 27, school nurses have been screening students who have traveled to China in recent weeks and have also been checking students who reportedly have fevers.
Coronavirus is the cause of an outbreak of respiratory illness and was first detected in Wuhan, China. Federal health officials are working to determine more about the outbreak.
Officials are screening the students using the protocol put in place by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Here are some tips on Austin ISD's website via the CDC for coronavirus preventative measures:
- Washing your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Stay home when you are sick.
- Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
District officials also recommend:
- Getting a flu shot.
- Eating a nutritious diet of fresh fruits and vegetables.
- Drinking lots of water.
- Staying physically active.
- Getting plenty of sleep.
