Coronavirus updates in Central Texas: Travis County reports 6 new deaths, 537 new cases

Here are the latest COVID-19 updates, closures and postponements in Central Texas for Monday, Dec. 21.

COVID-19 numbers:

  • Texas: More than 1.3 million cases have been reported in the state, and more than 25,200 people in Texas have died, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services.
  • Central Texas counties: 
    • Travis County: At least 46,029 cases have been reported and at least 522 people have died. At least 41,131 people have recovered from the virus.
    • Hays County: At least 9,010 confirmed cases have been reported and at least 120 people have died. At least 7,459 people have recovered from the virus.
    • Williamson County: At least 18,004 cases have been reported in the county and at least 194 people have died. At least 16,652 people have recovered from the virus.

Updates:

6:30 p.m. – Travis County reports six new COVID-19 deaths since Friday for a total of 522, making the coronavirus the third leading cause of death in the county in 2020.

There have been 46,029 confirmed cases in Travis County, with 41,131 recoveries.

5 p.m. – Hays County reports one new COVID-19 death, a San Marcos woman in her 80s. The county also reported 251 new lab-confirmed cases since Friday, bringing the county's total number of lab-confirmed cases to 9,010. At least 7,459 people have recovered from the virus in Hays County. Twenty-five people are currently hospitalized.

Williamson County is reporting seven new deaths since Friday for a total of 194. The county has had 18,004 total confirmed cases and an estimated 16,652 recoveries. Ninety-three people are currently hospitalized.

2:10 p.m. - Tuesday, Dec. 21, Gov. Greg Abbott will receive the coronavirus vaccine. We will stream it on-air and online

2:05 p.m. – The Hays County judge, along with his entire family, has tested positive for coronavirus

1 p.m. – While it’s not recommended to travel or gather for the holidays, these are some guidelines to help ensure that your gatherings are a little safer.

12:30 p.m. – At a press briefing on Dec. 21, Austin's top doctor, Dr. Mark Escott, said COVID-19 will likely become the third-leading cause of death in Travis County the week of Christmas. He said that as of Dec. 21, there have been 516 coronavirus-related deaths reported in the county.  

12 p.m. – Manor ISD said it was notified over the weekend that three new coronavirus cases were reported. One was a staff member of ShadowGlen Elementary, one was a staff member of Manor Senior High and one was a central office staff member. 

All staff members who were in close contact with the staffers are being asked to self-quarantine, the district said. The district also said the facility where the staffers spend their days are closed to be sanitized.

11:15 a.m. – The Texas State Capitol is set to open to the public starting Jan. 4, Gov. Greg Abbott tweeted Dec. 21. "Welcome back," Abbott said.

10:10 a.m. – TSA says Saturday, Dec. 19, was the busiest day at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport since the pandemic began. More than 13,000 people traveled on that day. The Friday before was the fourth busiest day and the Sunday after was the third.

8 a.m. – APH will give a COVID-19 update at 10 a.m. just days before Christmas.
