Coronavirus updates in Central Texas: APH gives COVID-19 update

Here are the latest COVID-19 updates, closures and postponements in Central Texas for Wednesday, Jan. 6.

COVID-19 numbers:

  • Texas: More than 1.6 million cases have been reported in the state, and more than 28,200 people in Texas have died, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services.
  • Central Texas counties: 
    • Travis County: At least 53,935 cases have been reported and at least 564 people have died. At least 48,270 people have recovered from the virus.
    • Hays County: At least 11,291 confirmed cases have been reported and at least 137 people have died. At least 9,500 people have recovered from the virus. 
    • Williamson County: At least 22,836 cases have been reported in the county and at least 214 people have died. At least 20,659 people have recovered from the virus.

Updates:

5:55 p.m. – Austin/Travis County health officials add 663 new cases, 508 more recoveries and three more deaths. Currently, 569 people are hospitalized, 162 are in the ICU and 104 are on ventilators.

5:30 p.m. – The Hays County Local Health Department reports one COVID-related fatality: a Buda man in his 50s. The department also reports 129 new lab-confirmed cases, six new hospitalizations and seven new hospital discharges, along with 164 additional people now considered recovered.

Williamson County health officials add 400 new cases and 338 more recoveries.

10:44 a.m. – More students are returning to school Jan. 6 after the winter break. The following schools designated Jan. 5 as a student holiday, meaning the first day of classes after winter break is Jan. 6:
