Coronavirus updates in Central Texas: Austin-Travis County leaders announce new orders for businesses

Here are the latest COVID-19 updates in Central Texas for Thursday, Jan. 13.

COVID-19 numbers:

  • Texas: 
  • Central Texas counties: 
    • Austin-Travis County: The seven-day moving average for new hospital admissions is 114, and an average of 520 people are hospitalized. The community transmission rate is 1,295.7. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 142,348 cases have been reported and at least 1,223 people have died.
    • Hays County: There are currently 7,154 active cases, and 20 people are currently hospitalized. Since the beginning of the pandemic, at least 38,776 confirmed cases have been reported and at least 420 people have died. 
    • Williamson County: There are 1,678 new cases of coronavirus in Williamson County. Fifteen percent of hospital beds are available, and 5% of ICU beds are available. Since the beginning of the pandemic, at least 86,609 cases have been reported and at least 763 people have died.

11:15 p.m.  Austin Public Health and Travis County are partnering to hold free COVID-19 vaccination clinics from Jan. 14 to Jan. 17.

  • Community transmission is roughly flat from yesterday at 1,242.59 cases per 100,000 over the past week
  • Hospital admissions for the metro up to 113.9 per day over the past week (new pandemic high)
  • 634 COVID-19 patients in Austin area (TSA O) hospitals, up 17 from yesterday
    • 13.6% bed availability
    • 14.7% COVID/capacity
    • Pediatric patients are up seven to 36 (new pandemic high)
  • 152 COVID-19 patients in Austin area (TSA O) ICUs, up six from yesterday
    • 7.4% bed availability (24 adult + 11 pediatric = 35 total beds)
    • 32% COVID/capacity

3:15 p.m. – Austin ISD's Director of Visual and Performing Arts implemented new COVID-19 guidelines for students and audience members. 

According to the letter, all students, staff and audience members are required to wear masks at indoor performances, with student performers wearing masks even while performing. Campuses will also reduce the capacity at events based on venue size and anticipated audience to ensure proper social distancing. 

Students will have a verbal health screening for COVID-19 symptoms on a daily basis in order to participate in a rehearsal or performance. Anyone who has symptoms should not attend any school event, the letter stated.

11 a.m. – Austin-Travis County leaders announced Thursday that businesses will now be required to post signage that informs employees and customers of health and safety recommendations related to the local COVID-19 risk-based stages. Businesses will be fined $1,000 if they do not post the required signage. 

The orders also support businesses imposing and posting additional rules or guidelines for customers, including requiring proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test result.
